Ryan Nelsen signs for Spurs on a free from Blackburn
Tottenham have confirmed the signing of New Zealander Ryan Nelsen from Blackburn Rovers. In what is essentially a post transfer deadline day deal, Tottenham have confirmed the signing following international clearance.
Nelsen’s former club Blackburn cancelled his contract following lengthy injuries, which meant that Nelsen could move to Spurs on a free on Thursday. The defender, 34, is lined up as a replacement for Sebastien Bassong who moved to Wolves during the January transfer window.
New Zealand born Nelsen spent seven years at Blackburn before his contract was cancelled on Tuesday. He is now eligible for Tottenham’s Premier League game against Liverpool on Monday night. Nelsen who is said to be looking forward to the challenge ahead at Tottenham, captained New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and said of the transfer:
“Medals, trophies are things you strive for. Blackburn got to five semis and never made a final, so it’s very exciting”
