Breaking Football News: England 2012 Squad Announced

May 16, 2012 by PLT in England, UEFA Euro 2012 with 0 Comments

England’s squad for the Euro 2012 Championships has been announced. New England manager Roy Hodgson is expected to hold a press conference at 1400 BST to explain his decisions, with the notable absence of Rio Ferdinand likely to be one of the key talking points following confirmation of the squad for this summer’s championships. The squad includes only four strikers, despite Wayne Rooney’s absence through suspension for the first two games of England’s tournament, while other casualties are Manchester City’s Micah Richards and Adam Johnson. The squad features several players who have struggled to secure first team football for their clubs this season, including Man City’s James Milner and Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe.

Perhaps the most suprising of inclusions is that of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has only played a bit part in Arsenal’s first team this season after arriving at the Emirates for £15 million from Southampton. Also failing to make the full squad and the ‘standby’ list is Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, a player many pundits predicted would be part of the squad at least, for this summers championships. Here’s the full list:

Roy Hodgson, alongside the FA, have also chosen a list of ‘Standby’ players in case injuries to any of the main England Squad occur prior to the European Championships (UEFA Euro 2012) which is to be played in Ukraine and Poland this summer. The standby list of players are as follows:

Standby players: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea).

England 2012 Squad Update – From the Press Conference:

  • The latest from the 1400 BST press conference is that Steven Gerrard will captain the England team going into Euro 2012. Hodgson also stated that he chose to include John Terry for ‘football reasons’ with the same reason being cited for Rio Ferdinand’s non-inclusion.

Of his squad selection, Hodgson said:

“It’s not been an easy squad to put together but I’m pleased with the squad I’ve put together and I think it’s a well balanced squad.”

  • It seems that the reason Micah Richard’s misses out is because in Phil Jones, Hodgson has a more versatile player, who can play in several positions.

What do you think of the squad? What changes would you make? We’d love to hear your views so feel free to add a comment below and join the debate.
