Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen on Manchester United’s transfer radar
Young Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen is apparently a target of Manchester United in the January transfer window. United have mounting injury concerns with midfielders Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher already sidelined. Following last nights thrashing of Fulham at Craven Cottage, impressive stand-in midfielder Phil Jones has now joined the current casualty list with a suspected fractured cheekbone. The injury is set to keep Jones out of action for close to six weeks.
The issue Sir Alex Ferguson has is that aside from raiding the youth squad for backup (which many fans would like to see), he really is down to bare bones at the moment. Ashley Young also picked up a knock and was replaced at Craven Cottage last night, although it’s doubtful as to whether it will be serious and was perhaps just a precaution given that Fergie has just Carrick, Giggs, Nani, Valencia and Park to choose from his currently depleted squad.
Danish international Eriksen is just 19, and if a deal goes through in January then it would be be a very good signing for United. The issue is that the Denmark midfielder currently has a contract with Ajax which runs until 2014.
United’s assistant coach Rene Meulensteen said of Christian Eriksen:
‘This is a player that is on our radar’
‘But that is to be expected. If people weren’t looking, no-one would ever have an opinion on these players’
‘It is true that a player like Eriksen would fit our transfer policy’
Meulensteen did go on to add that:
‘to suggest that we [United] are about to make a move is not true.’
Meulensteen previously talked up Manchester United’s interest in Wesley Sneijder back in the summer and this signing never materialised. It appears that the report may be just another rumour but we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
